Text messaging as a recruitment tool is becoming more and more popular, and more and more effective. It’s instantaneous, it’s discreet and it’s to the point.
But, as with anything, there’s a right way to use the technology, and a wrong way.
Depending on the CMS system you’re using, you will more than likely have automated text messaging built in. This will allow you to send text messages to a number of candidates on your list, without spending too much time.
The trick with automated, bulk text messages is to keep them personal and friendly, without giving away that they’re automated and generic.
You also need to make sure you’re not self-promoting too much. Candidates will see right through it!
Give your candidates the option to opt-in or out of your text messages, and respect their selection – if they choose not to receive text messages, make sure you’re still sending them the information through another means such as email.
Think about what kind of messages you’d respond to. Test it out on others – send them messages and ask them what they think. Does it make them immediately delete the message? Does it make them want to contact you?
Don’t send too many messages! You don’t want to be that annoying person who messages your candidates all the time. Make sure you’re only sending messages when there’s something important to say, and even then, keep it infrequent.
